WHITLEY Bay Rockcliff Rugby Club are holding a registration day for their mini and youth squads next month.

The club is seeing a rapid rise in the number of players signing up for their mini/midi and youth teams, and are looking to encourage more children to try the sport.

The event takes place on Saturday, August 20, from 1pm, with all children guaranteed a game.

The club has also been working with traders in Whitley Bay.

Vikki, who owns Blueberry Square in the town, and Neil are keen to see the club thrive in the future and make sure there are players coming through the ranks, with the eventual aim of playing for the first team.

Earlier this year the traders helped the club raise £650 for the junior section after donating a range of prizes for a raffle.

Vikki said: “The youngsters are the future of the club. We’re doing all we can to promote them and get them interested in the game.”

Her two sons Charlie, 13, and Danny, eight, joined Rockcliff’s junior teams earlier this year, and Vikki said: “We wanted to give back a little bit to the club.

“The coaches work hard to support the kids, both boys and girls, and they turn up every Sunday morning, helping travel all over with them.”
