Young rugby players are celebrating a major first after winning the Tynedale Sevens tournament.

Rockcliff Under 12s recorded a landmark win for the Whitley Bay-based outfit when they became the first team from the club’s minis and midis section to scoop a major trophy.

Coach Simon Forster’s team managed to go through the whole tournament with an unblemished record but their quest for honours got off to a inauspicious start as Rockcliff fell behind a try by Tynedale in the opening stage of their first contest but

After bouncing back and overcoming Tynedale by four tries to one, Rockliffe beat Blaydon, Cockermouth and Carlisle before overpowering the hosts again in the semi-finals and then beating Wharfedale – who had already eliminated last year’s winners Alnwick – in the final in resounding style with a 7-2 victory.

Josh Leighton was the star of the show for Rockliffe as he was in unstoppable form and was the tournament’s top try-scorer.

There were also a string of excellent performances from Jackson McIntosh, Adam Hay, Robert Ord and Zac Bailey as well as skipper Will Forster.

“We were up against one of best sides in Yorkshire and indeed England in the final so this really is a remarkable achievement and it’s great for them to finally get an honour to their name as a reward for all their endeavours this season,” Forster said.

“Our lads wanted the trophy badly in the final because we have been so close before but never won anything. I’ve never seen the lads look so happy on final whistle.

“It was our first ever trophy and Rockcliff mini/midis section’s first too, and hopefully it’s the first of many.”

Now Forster is hoping to build on the club’s success next season.

“We will be working our socks off over the summer because the lads will be moving up to 15-a-side next season and we want to be ready for what will be a big step-up,” Forster said.

“We have made a lot of progress over the last few years because we started from scratch and we are keen for anyone around North Tyneside who wants to join us to get in touch.

“We are always on the look-out for new players, even lads who have never played the game before and who want to check it out.”
