Victoria gets place at the Olympics as a volunteer

AN ATHLETICS club official in the borough is celebrating being named a volunteer at this year’s Olympic Games in London.

Victoria Spence, North of Tyne Athletics network co-ordinator, has been selected as one of the 70,000 official volunteers following an application and selection process.

Games Makers will undertake a wide range of roles.

Many of these may be behind the scenes or may require working anti-social hours.

Some may have to work off-site in a warehouse distributing uniforms; others will be outside exposed to the elements for hours on end.

Victoria said: “Sport has always been my passion and as soon as it was announced the Olympics were coming to London I knew I wanted to be part of it in some way.

“When my bid for tickets was unsuccessful it was great to be selected to volunteer.

“I’ll be a transport bus team worker at the athletes’ village, which may only be a small role but I cannot wait to be part of the biggest sporting event in the world.”
