Cub reporters from Cullercoats Primary School were special guests at the News Guardian offices in Whitley Bay as part of a newpaper project.

To improve literacy skills, the pupils had been given a challenge of creating their own front page each, so they came to their local weekly to see how it's done.

I went out to visit the students and show them what life is like for a reporter, how we get stories, put them together, and how the newspaper industry is expanding into more media formats.

And as a special treat, the children were given a chance to visit the office, meet the staff and see how stories are edited before going off to print.

Year four teacher Simon Meardon said: "We have been working on a newspaper project looking at how stories are written.

"We have been focusing on the first paragraph, because we know how important that first paragraph is, so the children have been learning all about the who, what, where, when, why and how.

"The trip to the News Guardian offices gave them a chance to learn more about how a newspaper is put together."
