ON a warm and sunny evening Whitley Bay had just one problem when they travelled to Horden for their fourth pre-season friendly – they had no goalkeeper available!
Leading from the front, manager Ian Chandler donned the keeper's jersey and restricted the home side to just one goal.
Chandler had previously been an emergency keeper in a league game at Tow Law a few years ago and did a good job on that occasion but there is little danger of him challenging Terry Burke for the regular position between the posts!
On an excellent playing surface Whitley controlled the game for lengthy periods and first half goals from Paul Chow and Paul Robinson gave Whitley a 2-0 lead before Roy Allen's half hit shot deceived Chandler in a rare home attack just before the interval.
Whitley made several changes during the second half and although Horden looked livelier, they did not pose a serious threat to the Whitley defence.
In stoppage time, Robbie Livermore added Whitley's third following good play by Christian Graham.
Whitley conclude their pre-season fixtures on Saturday, August 2, with a home game against Bradford side Thackley, who have become regular visitors to Hillheads in recent years.
