I WAS unable to attend the meeting at which Culture Quarter explained their ideas for the Playhouse and Dome, but I have since spoken to a number of residents who attended the packed meeting and who were impressed by the presentation.
The Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade deserves thanks for organising the meeting, and it's clear from people's reaction that there is a great desire to hear more from the council about the progress or otherwise, of the regeneration plans.

I notice that
the chief executive of North Tyneside Council, writing to residents in the local press recently, has said that the council needs to "get better at telling you how your views have shaped the decisions that have been taken".

He also says that he has asked officers to see "if there is a better way to involve you in the decision making process" and that residents have said that "the council could do more to really engage and act on your opinions".

Many people in Whitley Bay feel that there has been little or no meaningful engagement surrounding the regeneration plans (the recent session at the skate park open day from 11am to 3pm was impossible for those working residents to get to).

I would therefore ask the chief executive via your newspaper, to follow up his words on the need to improve engagement with firm action and take this excellent opportunity to arrange a public meeting where council officials can explain, in depth, their plans for the Playhouse, Dome, Joint Service Centre and hotel, and answer any questions residents may have.

COUN F S AUSTIN
Monkseaton South Ward,
North Tyneside Council.
