I am writing to thank News Guardian readers for the support they have shown for Metro Re-invigoration.
The Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority and Nexus, working with local MPs and Minister for the North East Nick Brown, have now secured £300million from Government to modernise Metro over the next ten years.

This is an historic achievement, the most important deal for Metro since the day it opened in 1980. It means Metro is secure for years to come, and can modernise to meet the expectations of travellers long into the future.

It will also being valuable investment to the region, securing and creating more than 1,000 jobs in Metro and the building trades.

I know many thousands of News Guardian readers signed petitions of support or signed up at the website www.nexus.org.uk to back the bid.

Transport Minister Rosie Winterton told us that the very high level of local support, from passengers, politicians and business people alike, had been one factor in convincing her that Metro was worth investing in.

COUN DAVID WOOD
Chairman, Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority.
