IN response to Heather McDougall's letter printed in last week's News Guardian I should like to clarify the position of Northumbria Police and the local authority.
Our response of removing dens built in public open spaces has been decided after listening to residents telling us their concerns, after taking into consideration the level of disorder, underage drinking and smoking resulting from them and after thinking about the real dangers posed to children.

By removing these dens we don't criminalise youngsters but prevent youth disorder, whilst also protecting these young people from harm.

These dens are unsightly, litter strewn, health hazards often frequented by a hard-core of troublemakers intent upon intimidating and frightening residents and in support of residents wishes we shall remove any and all reported to the police.

Crime in Whitley Bay fell by almost 20 per cent last year and this year tackling youth disorder is a recognised priority not just for the police and local authority but for the whole community and I would ask everyone to commit themselves to improving the environment and making Whitley Bay a safer and more pleasant place to live.

TONY BLACKLOCK
Neighbourhood Inspector
Whitley Bay,
Northumbria Police.
