MAY we ask your readers to help us quell an upsurge in thefts of fuel, materials and even equipment which are hitting construction and civil engineering firms – and have led in one instance to the tragic death of an innocent woman.
We ask everyone who lives near any contractor's depot or site works to tell police immediately of any suspicious activities at, or near, such places outside work hours.

It will be a public service greatly appreciated.

The police are already active on this, but with fuel prices and inflation still high, and now the credit crunch on top, we fear the thefts may increase.

To indicate losses incurred, 1,000 litres of diesel which a year or so back would have been worth £300 are now worth nearer £800.

Prices of contracting and building materials, like piping and copper wire, have recently soared by up to 33 per cent.

Any support we get will help us to keep costs down.

DOUGLAS KELL
Director
Civil Engineering Contractors Association (North-East)
