When will we get our swimming pool back?

I HAVE been using the gym facilities at Whitley Bay swimming pool for a number of years.
In May last year members were told by the council that the swimming pool would close for refurbishment and this would take a year to complete, re-opening in May 2008.

Earlier this year we were led to believe that the work would not be completed un
til Autumn 2008.

Today anyone driving past the Whitley Bay swimming pool will notice that it looks like a bombed out shell of a building with most of the brickwork removed. There is no way that the refurbishment will be completed by the Autumn.

I would like our 'elected mayor' to tell the people of Whitley Bay when they can expect to get their swimming pool back. In the meantime people in Whitley Bay have to travel to Tynemouth or Killingworth.

Surely it would have been much quicker to have demolished the swimming pool and replace it with a new one. In addition how much is this refurbishment costing compared with the original estimates including the cost of a brand new facility?
