Record audience numbers for Whitley Bay cinema
A popular boutique cinema is celebrating record audience numbers following a major refurbishment.
The Jam Jar Cinema, in Whitley Bay, welcomed more than 19,000 admissions in the last quarter of 2019 compared to 11,000 in the same period in 2018.
Founder Dan Ellis said: “Many factors have contributed to this upturn. We successfully opened Screens 2 and 3 plus a new Foyer – essentially doubling our space.
“The fact we can show up to 90 screenings a week now, is a game-changer for us.”
He added: “I also believe our considered programming was a large factor; we screened a variety of family favourites, classics and new releases such as ‘Last Christmas’, which was our most popular festive film.
“We pride ourselves on showing the best of Hollywood, Independent and British films. In fact 11 of our top 20 movies in 2019 were either British or Independent.
“Our top title of the whole year was ‘Downton Abbey’ and biopics ‘Stan & Ollie’ and ‘Rocketman’ did really well for us.
“I am hugely proud of our success, grateful to our loyal, local audience and to our staff who continually give excellent customer service.
“The recent regeneration of Whitley Bay has also been hugely positive for us; it’s so encouraging to see a diverse night-time economy emerging with an eclectic mix of new retail offerings opening weekly – the town is a very different one to when we opened in 2013.”
The cinema plans to invest all profits made from last year back into the business; putting the finishing touches on its first lift which is set to open doors next month and making the whole venue as accessible as possible.
