Top ten: PCP deals for under £400 a month

An executive saloon, an SUV, MPV – whatever you want, it’s available new for under £400pcm

The vast majority of new cars are bought using PCP – Personal Contract Purchase. It puts a new car within range, with its low level of repayment at the front end – although naturally you’ll be paying for it further down the line.

Here is our top ten, based on 15 per cent of the car’s value, plus the manufacturer discount contribution, if there is one, and it’s based on three years and 30,000 miles.

10. BMW X1 sDrive 18d SE 5dr

Target price cost per month: £397 Target price (on the road): £26,739 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 5.9% APR
One of the first premium SUVs remains just that, one of the best you can buy. If you really need four-wheel drive then there’s the xDrive version, but this two-wheel drive sDrive will save you money all the way down the line, particularly when linked to this sensible diesel engine.

9. Jaguar XF 2.0d 180 R-Sport 4dr Auto

Target price cost per month: £375 Target price (on the road): £31,577 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 4.9% APR and a finance contribution of £2395
Jaguar’s rival to the BMW 5 Series is a lovely executive saloon, with high equipment levels even if the cabin isn’t the last word in luxury. But if you want handling prowess as well as power, this Jaguar really can fly.

8. Audi Q2 1.4 TFSI Sport 5dr

Target price cost per month: £316 Target price (on the road): £23,827 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 5.5% APR
This is the smallest SUV that Audi makes, and it’s fun to drive with a seriously high-quality cabin. There’s ample technology and class to back up the eye-catching package.

7. VW Tiguan 2.0 TDI BMT 150 SE Nav DSG

Target price cost per month: £311 Target price (on the road): £26,219 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 5.1% APR and a finance contribution of £2000
This second-generation SUV has moved notably up-market, with not only a strong range of engines but also a superior cabin that is almost on a par with an Audi Q3. Add in a sensible 2.0-litre diesel engine and you have a great combination.

6. Mercedes-Benz E220d SE 9G-Tronic

Target price cost per month: £368 Target price (on the road): £32,952 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 4.9% APR and a finance contribution of £2058
An E-Class saloon for under £400 a month looks great, and this elegant executive car makes a superb companion for work and at weekends. Even SE trim adds a great deal of kit, including heated leather seats, climate control and sat nav.

5. Ford Galaxy 2.0 TDCi 150 Zetec

Target price cost per month: £327 Target price (on the road): £26,590 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 0% APR
MPVs may be more out of favour these days, but if you need a good-sized people carrier the Ford Galaxy is the way to go. There’s lashings of room for people and their gear, and the 2.0-litre diesel engine adds oomph and economy, while the Zetec trim adds more than enough kit.

4. BMW 1 Series M140i Nav

Target price cost per month: £386 Target price (on the road): £29,424 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 4.9% APR and a finance contribution of £2250
This is a great combination of hot hatch and premium experience. The 3.0-litre straight-six engine has 335bhp, more than enough to propel you to a happy place, while the luxurious cabin features such quality kit as the iDrive infotainment system with sat nav.

3. Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi N-Connecta

Target price cost per month: £311 Target price (on the road): £22,532 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 4.9% APR and a finance contribution of £1500
The Qashqai may not win as many awards and group tests as it used to, but it’s still a great all-round small SUV. This N-Connecta trim adds sat nav and reversing camera, and the 1.5-litre diesel engine adds enough grunt without adding much to the bills.

2. Skoda Kodiaq 2.0 TDI SE 4×4 DSG 7st

Target price cost per month: £340 Target price (on the road): £27,440 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 5.5% APR a finance contribution of £2000
This is one of the reasons the Qashqai doesn’t win so much. Skoda’s Kodiaq is one of the most contemporary of large SUVs with low running costs and huge amounts of space – including seven seats. A classic Skoda combination of economy, practicality and room – yours for £340 a month.

1. Audi A4 3.0 TDI Quattro Sport S tronic [Leather]

Target price cost per month: £380 Target price (on the road): £31,586 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 2.9% APR and a finance contribution of £3150
What a deal. Audi’s latest A4 saloon is a gorgeous vehicle, enhanced even further by the smooth 3.0-litre V6 diesel in this variant. It’s not much more to run than the 2.0-litre four-pot but delivers a lot more sophistication and performance. Sport trim adds all the kit you could need, but if it’s all the kit you want on your mind then perhaps add the 12.3in Virtual Cockpit and adjustable lumbar support to the front seats.
