AN ENLIGHTENING and informative talk on naval battles at the start of the First World War was given to Cullercoats Mens Club.
Mike Scott, retired science teacher and now part time Newcastle city guide, covered the background and outcomes around Falklands 1914.
The disaster at Coronel which saw the English fleet defeated after being outgunned in range, power and training by German battleships showed the inadequacy of the British ships.
The second battle was off the Falklands where new Cruisers were added to the British squadron, helping turn the tables and inflicting a defeat on the Germans.
The club meets on a Wednesday between 10.30am and noon throughout the year, with the exception of August and the Christmas period.
