A couple who opened up their garden for a fundraising event have handed over the fruits of their labour.

Annette and Bill Maddison, with a little help from family and five friends, opened their garden in Monkseaton with a plant sale, raffles and teas.

In total, £1,369.70 was raised for a new garden at the oncology day unit at North Tyneside General Hospital.

Keen gardener Annette said: “Cancer touches the lives of so many people and a lot of my friends and fellow WI members have received treatment at the unit. They’ve all spoken of the excellent, compassionate care they’ve received and we wanted to do something to help the unit.”

Oncology day unit manager Allison Nielsen said: “We are extremely grateful that Annette and Bill decided to open up their garden especially to raise money for our unit.

“Fittingly, the donation will go towards a new garden at the unit where patients can enjoy a calm and peaceful environment.”

Work is expected to start later this year on the garden.
