Police in the borough have been taking action to turn away known criminals from the area and crack down on offenders.

As part of Operation Titan, officers from the Neighbourhood policing team and the Metro Unit joined officers from Metro to carry out high visibility patrols around North Shields Metro Station.

A number of penalty notices were served for fare evasion, one person was issued with a direction to leave notice and several others were stopped and checked.

Sergeant Guy Morgan said: “The aim of Operation Titan is to tackle rowdy and disorderly behaviour on the Metro system, identify known offenders travelling into the area and to prevent travelling criminals coming here. It also allows us to prevent fare evasion and reassure the public that we are taking action.

“The patrols were a success and we hope it serves as a warning that offenders are not welcome on our patch. We also had positive feedback from people who felt reassured that police were present.”

The initiative coincides with the forcewide Operation Soundwave, is aimed at cracking down on opportunist thieves in the run-up to Christmas.
