Air cadet jumps up the medal table
An air cadet soared to new heights to claim an athletics medal.
Longbenton Air Cadet Ben Collins won Silver at the National Air Cadets Athletics Championships.
The St Mary’s School sixth former competed against the UK’s top air cadet athletes, pulling out a personal best to jump 1.7m to land in first place, but was knocked back to second due to his first two jumps at the height being fails compared to just one for his rival.
Ben said: “It was great to be competing against the best of our organisation and some of the UK’s best.”
Ben had won Gold in the high jump at both the Durham/Northumberland Wing Championships and the North Region Championships to secure his place at the national competition.
Officer Commanding, Flight Lieutenant Gary Richardson said: “Ben is an amazing athlete and a natural sporting talent, shown by his high jump success, which being a runner, is an event he doesn’t train regularly for.
“We are thrilled for him and to have won silver at a national level is a huge achievement.”
Ben joined seven youngsters from Durham/Northumberland Wing and his silver medal helped the North Region Team to second overall.
