FOUR Air Cadets from North Tyneside got the chance to attend a prestigious presentation evening at HMS Calliope to find out more about the Royal Navy.

Cadet Sergeant Sam O’Neil, Flight Sgt Jessica Marran, Cadet Carl Soulsby and Cadet Warrant Officer Liam Allcock, of the 861 Wideopen Squadron Air Cadets, joined local business leaders, Royal Navy personnel and other reserve and regular Armed Forces at the event, where the Royal Navy presentation team delivered a session about the need for the Royal Navy and the strategic nuclear deterrent.

The cadets also got the chance to speak to serving personnel, including guest of honour Rear Admiral Christopher Hockley, the Flag Officer Scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland.

Flight Sgt Jessica Marran said: “Admiral Hockley was really approachable and easy to speak to despite his rank and position in the Royal Navy.

“He asked me about what I wanted to do with my future career and we spoke about what I have recently done through the Air Cadets.

“It was brilliant to be able to speak to such a senior officer.”

Squadron boss Flight Lieutenant James Elliott said: “I was particularly pleased that the cadets had the chance to speak to Rear Admiral Hockley.

“This was quite a rare opportunity for them and the Admiral took the time to speak to all of them about their cadet careers to date.”
