Anger at 50% increase in parking charges

A resident has hit out at a 50 per cent increase in parking charges saying it could deter people from visiting the coast.

Richard Rainbow was shocked to see the charges at the Rendezvous cafe car park on Whitley Bay seafront had gone up from 80p an hour to £1.20 overnight.

I can’t see how the council can justify this increase.

Mr Rainbow said: “I can’t see how the council can justify this increase.

“It wasn’t even the start of the financial year.

“People are annoyed about this. It’s nice to walk along the seafront or beaches but are now facing this big hike.”

A council spokesperson said: “We have kept car parking increases in North Tyneside to an absolute minimum.

“We are investing heavily in North Tyneside’s seafront to make it a vibrant and popular area, and we want to continue to encourage a steady turnover of people to come into the area to support tourism, local businesses and keep the economy buoyant. Even with these increases, we believe our charges offer value for money.

“Income from our car parks covers the cost of their maintenance, lighting and enforcement. This increase will also help meet requests from residents for extra enforcement officers to extend patrols in the car parks.”
