A woman is stepping out to help raise money for charity in memory of two family members.
Anne Cassidy, from Wallsend, is taking part in St Oswald’s Hospice’s Lantern Walk.
The walk is taking place on Saturday evening at Newcastle Racecourse with participants coming together to remember loved ones – with Anne taking part in memory of her mother and brother, John.
Her mother stayed on St Oswald’s inpatient unit in February, 1987.
At the time, Anne lived in Scotland but was so impressed with the care she hoped to one day return to the north east and work at the hospice. She now works as a staff nurse in St Oswald’s Day Hospice.
Anne said: “The care that my mum received was fantastic so I always hoped to return as a staff nurse and be able to repay the hospice.
“In May 2002, I successfully joined the inpatient ward team and then went on to work in day hospice, where I still work one day a week.
“In 2013, my brother John sadly died on the inpatient ward. During his stay, the hospice allowed me to care for him, as well as be his sister.
“This was so important to us both, the fact that I could provide hands-on care during John’s last days was extremely special and I’ll never forget that.”
“Even though St Oswald’s has been a big part of my life for such a long time, I’ve never taken part in a fund-raising event before.
“When I heard about the Lantern Walk I knew that at the age of 60 it was going to be my first St Oswald’s event.”
“The fact that it’s in memory of people is very special. I’m really looking forward to seeing the sea of lanterns at dusk, it will be very poignant and emotional.
“I’ll be walking with my brother Francis, who is travelling down from Edinburgh to take part. We both enjoy walking so we are really looking forward to it.”
“We will never be able to fully repay St Oswald’s for what they have done for us but the Lantern Walk is a special way to remember our Mother and Brother and say thank you to the Hospice.”
Doors open on Saturday at 7pm and the walk will begin at 8.30pm.
