Annual film festival beats competition to scoop culture award

The annual Whitley Bay Film Festival has scooped a top award for Best Event in Tyneside.

The festival, which celebrated its third birthday last year, picked up the accolade at the Journal Culture Awards last week.

Co-director Ema Lea said: “It was a surprise becase we are just a small community festival and it is nice to be recognised in such a way.

“We have a lot of volunteers and local businesses that provide a wide area of creative input into the festival, which is what I think makes it a bit different to other events.

“This award is a great recognition for all the volunteers who have helped make the event happen for the past three years.”

Preparations are now well under way for the fourth festival, which is set to take place in the town in August this year.
