Appeal for information after major coastal operation
Police are appealing for help after a major search operation took place off the north east coast.
Several emergency teams were involved in a search along Tynemouth’s coastline from 5.45pm on Wednesday.
Coastguards led an extensive search and rescue operation involving Northumbria Police, Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade, lifeboats from Cullercoats and Tynemouth, and Northumbria Police.
The alarm had been raised after someone possibly entered the water at Longsands beach.
But after a two-hour long search, coastguards stood the teams down, describing it as a false alarm with good intent, but police investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
Chief Inspector Dave Gould, from Northumbria Police, said: “Considerable search and rescue efforts have been made this evening along the beach and in the waters; despite this, nobody has been found.
“If anyone was in the area at the time and thinks they saw something or has any information we urge them to contact us to help with our enquiries. “
Anyone with information should contact Northumbria Police on 101 quoting reference 928 100216.
