Rising Sun Country Park, in Benton, will feature on BBC’s Countryfile on Sunday at 7pm.

Presenter Matt Baker and a Countryfile film crew recently spent a day touring the park and interviewing staff, volunteers and former workers, including 81-year-old Danny Hamilton, who worked at the Rising Sun Colliery for 20 years until its closure in 1969.

Park manager Carl McLean said: “Matt was especially interested in the heritage of the park and the formation of Swallow Pond from collapsed mine-shafts in the 1950s.

“He also got involved in some woodland management with our land officer and volunteers including wood chipping and tree thinning. He also helped us staple tree stumps, which we do to prevent unwanted fires in the woods.”

Coun Eddie Darke, cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism, said: “I’m sure that once the programme goes out it will attract even more new visitors to the park and the Countryside Centre.”
