Body discovered after fire in Whitley Bay

A body has been discovered following a fire in Whitley Bay.

At just before 6.20am today (Friday, November 21), police were called to Whitley Road, in Whitley Bay, following reports the fire at a bin store.

Officers attended the scene along with the fire service where the fire was extinguished and the body recovered from the bin store.

A cordon is currently in place to allow police to examine the scene and carry out further investigations.

Acting Chief Inspector Andy Fairlamb, from Northumbria Police’s Major Crime Team, said: “Enquiries are in their very early stages in relation to this incident.

“Our officers are currently at the scene carrying out investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding it.

“I would urge anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area to contact us as they may have information to assist with the ongoing enquiries.

“I’d also ask anyone with concerns to speak to officers on patrol in the area who are patrolling to offer reassurance to residents.”
