THE body of an elderly man has been recovered from the sea near Tynemouth Pier.
Crewmen from Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat station were called out at 1.30pm today (Tuesday) after a report from Northumbria Police said there might be a possible body in the water.
The inshore lifeboat crew found the casualty, with the assistance of the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade, and recovered him to the lifeboat.
He was then transferred to the all-weather lifeboat, being taken to North Shields ferry landing to a waiting ambulance and police officers.
Adrian Don, spokesman for Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat station, said: “Our volunteer crewmembers are occasionally called upon to carry out tasks such as recovering deceased casualties and they try to offer those casualties as much dignity as possible during the operation.
“Our thoughts go out to the deceased man’s family at what will be a difficult and distressing time for them.”
