An award-winning beach has picked up yet another accolade after being named one of the top ten beaches in the UK.

Tynemouth Long Sands has made the coveted list of top ten UK beaches, as voted by TripAdvisor users in the 2014 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards.

It is the second year running that the beach has made the list.

Mayor Norma Redfearn said: “Tynemouth Long Sands is a stunning beach and it is no surprise to us that it has made the top ten nationally.

“We work hard to keep all our beaches in top condition – for residents and visitors to enjoy throughout the year.”

Long Sands came sixth in the TripAdvisor list and is a mile-long stretch of golden sands that attracts people from across the region and beyond. The Blue Flag award-winning beach is popular for many different reasons and is used all year round.

It has developed a national reputation as surf destination, staging prestigious national championships.

North Tyneside’s beaches at Tynemouth Long Sands (south), King Edward’s Bay and Whitley Bay (south) have all earned the prestigious Blue Flag, an international award for quality.

This accolade assures the public that the beaches are among the best in Europe, recognising clean water after rigorous testing; litter-free sands and top-notch facilities.

As further recognition for their excellent standards, all three – as well as Cullercoats Bay – have also been granted Seaside Awards, which commend beaches that are clean and where visitors can enjoy a range of activities.
