Buckets and spades ready for beach fun

Families are being encouraged to get their buckets and spades ready for an annual construction competition.

The annual Whitley Bay Sandcastle Competition will take place in front of the Rendezvous Cafe on Whitley Bay beach on Sunday, July 27, from 10am.

Officials at Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade are hoping it will be bigger and better than ever.

People can register from 10am to 1pm, with judging taking place at 1.30pm. Prizes and medals will be awarded for the best sandcastles and sculptures.

There will be a chance to meet some of the Hopscotch Entertainment characters including The Frozen Queen and Princess and Batman between 11am and 1pm. Other activities include face painting and shuggy boat rides.

Chamber secretary June Tolson said: “We’re hoping that more families than ever will get out their buckets and spades and get down to the beach for the sandcastle competition.

“It’s a terrific fun day out for people of all ages and the standard of sandcastles is getting better each year, with some real works of art.

“The main thing is that everyone enjoys themselves.”

She added: “The sandcastle competition is a real hit with the families that have taken part before but we want more people than ever to get stuck in this time around to make sure that it is really put on the map.”
