HE took over the reins at North Tyneside property and construction business Metnor over a decade ago, and now Stephen Rankin is preparing to overcome an altogether different set of hurdles.

The 47-year-old, pictured, is to compete at Burgham Horse Trials later this month.

Stephen, chairman and chief executive of the Killingworth-based Metnor Group, took up eventing last year after attending Hexham Horse Trials as a spectator, and has competed at events across the country since.

He will be competing on his nine-year-old gelding Tomorrow’s Dream.

Stephen has enjoyed early success in his short riding career, achieving third place at Askham Bryan last October.

Burgham Horse Trials Director, Semore Kurdi, said: “I am delighted to hear Stephen is competing at Burgham, and I hope he does well.”

The trials are being held at Burgham Park, near Morpeth, from Friday, July 22, to Sunday, July 24. For details, go to www.burghamhorsetrials.co.uk
