Plans to redesign and modernise a landmark building in North Shields are nearing completion.
YMCA North Tyneside was awarded £425,014 by the Big Lottery Fund’s Reaching Communities grant for work on their building in Church Way.
The building has been the YMCA’s home since 1938 and the funding has enabled work to be completed to create a modern community hub, offering integrated support and advice services, education, training and a range of leisure and sporting activities.
The building has undergone substantial alterations, with a major upgrade to the gym facilities as well as the redevelopment of kitchen facilities, and the redevelopment of community spaces.
Work is nearing completion, with a grand re-opening planned in June although some facilities, including the gym, are already open.
Dean Titterton, chief executive at YMCA North Tyneside, said: “This Reaching Communities grant from Big Lottery Fund has been a cornerstone to the redevelopment of our Church Way building.
“We now look to a future where YMCA has both the desire and the facilities to achieve it’s vision.”
Steve Pugh, head of operations at YMCA North Tyneside, said: “Our building is such an important landmark in North Shields and such an important hub for the local community. It’s amazing to see it being brought up to modern day standards and now the transformation of the building is almost complete, the grand opening can’t come soon enough.”
