A burglar stole cash from an elderly resident after a distraction burglary.

A man forced his way into the back garden of an address in St David’s Close, Whitley Bay, between 11am and 11.15am on Tuesday.

He then knocked on the patio door and entered the house of an elderly resident.

Once inside he distracted the woman and stole cash from her purse before making off.

The man is described as 6ft tall and around 30-years-old and was wearing a navy jacket.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

Detective Inspector, Sharon Chatterton, said: “We are carrying out enquiries in relation to this incident and warning householders to be on their guard, to watch out for elderly and vulnerable residents and to report any suspicious people or vehicles to police straight away.

“Extra officers are in the area carrying out patrols and speaking with people to offer reassurance.”
