Bus services on Boxing Day will be covered by Nexus, officials have revealed.
The public body will use funding from the North East Combined Authority to pay bus companies to operate 26 routes that would otherwise not be on the road.
Nexus will also be providing a core service on Metro and the Shields Ferry.
Coun Frank Lott, chairman of the Transport North East Tyne and Wear sub committee on the Combined Authority, said: “Boxing Day is getting busier every year, with Christmas sales starting in our town and city centres.
“People rely on public transport to get to the sales whether they are working that day or looking for a bargain.
“By paying for bus routes to operate, or by paying bus companies to extend services earlier or later in the day than they were otherwise planning, we are keeping people on the move.”
Passengers are advised to check the website www.nexus.org.uk for details of services over the Christmas and New Year period.
Among the services being covered are the number 1 North Shields-Whitley Bay; 53 Cramlington-North Shields; and 309 & 310 Newcastle-Whitley Bay/North Shields.
