An award-winning ice cream maker is backing regeneration plans for Whitley Bay seafront by extending his own premises.

Luciano Di Meo is bringing his own touch of the continent to Di Meo’s Ice Cream Parlour and Pizzeria by creating an outdoor all weather terrace at the family-run business in Marine Avenue.

The terrace, due to be completed in May, will feature locally made decking, large planers, seating and a unique purpose-built awning and window system.

Luciano, recently crowned ‘Champion of Champions’ by the Ice Cream Alliance of Great Britain and Ireland, said: “It was a fantastic achievement to win against such strong competition and now I hope that our success will continue to help in the regeneration of Whitley Bay by attracting more visitors to sample Britain’s best ice cream.

“I feel the future is looking rosy for Whitley Bay. Millions of pounds of lottery money is pouring into the town and the council is working hard to support local businesses bring about major investment while at the same time attracting more visitors.

“As a result I want to be prepared for what the future will bring and by investing in these improvements my customers will be able to relax in comfort whatever the weather.”

Mayor Norma Redfearn has welcomed news that businesses are investing in Whitley Bay.

She said: “This type of positive private investment will enhance the vitality and future prosperity of the town and shows businesses are supporting our vision to put the pride back in Whitley Bay and make it once again the region’s premier seaside resort.”
