Businesses still open despite road closure
Traders say they are still open for business, despite major disruption outside their units.
Work is currently being carried out by Northumbrian Water to reduce the risk of flooding in Burnside Road, in Whitley Bay.
As a result, the road is currently closed under the Metro line, with the road closures to continue for the rest of the year.
However, the five businesses in Burnside Road are keen to remind shoppers that they are still open, despite the ongoing work.
Vicky Dodds, of Signature Kitchens, Bathrooms and Tiles, said: “The road closure will continue up the street for the next nine months.
“We just want to let people know that we are still open, despite the diversions being in place.
“At the moment the work isn’t too bad, it’s just a section of the road that is closed, but the next phase will be right outside our business.
“The road is currently closed under the Metro bridge for the next four weeks.
“All of the businesses understand this work has to be done to protect the area from flooding and we fully support it but we have to make sure the business still comes in.
“We appreciate that people will have to take detours to get to us.”
In previous years, the area has suffered from severe flooding, with parts of the garage being left under water after heavy rainfall.
Northumbrian Water is investing an additional £2.5million on an innovative project which will see rainwater being diverted out to the North Sea.
