Nicholson’s Butchers, in Park View, Whitley Bay, is among the finalists in the Butchers Q Guild’s 2016 barbecue competition.

The popular establishment is among those representing the north east against six other Q Guild regions from around the UK in the national final on Sunday.

Nicholson’s Butchers qualified for the UK final’s speciality BBQ product category with its Bombay Beef Kebab, made with Northumbrian dry aged beef in a Bombay curry marinade and finished with fresh coriander.

Founded in 1914, Nicholson’s is the town’s last remaining traditional independent family butcher. It is now into its fourth generation, with Doug Nicholson, the grandson of the founder, remaining at the helm, with his own daughter Kathryn also an integral part along with Mark, Doug’s nephew.

The shop has won multiple awards for its products over the years in regional, national and international meat sector competitions.

Almost 400 products from Q Guild Butchers nationwide were entered for this year’s competition.

Q Guild national chairman, Alnwick butchers Mark Turnbull said: “Entries for the BBQ competition have increased again this year, such is the growing stature of our annual highlight. All north east regional winners are to be congratulated on qualifying for the national final and we wish them every success.”
