Air cadets from Longbenton entertained a crowd of nearly 17,000 when they joined the north east’s celebrations at the Ashes.

The band of the 2344 (Longbenton) Squadron performed at the Emirates, home to Durham County Cricket Club, which was hosting the fourth Ashes test of the series.

The young musicians gave spectators a taste of the north east by performing a special repertoire entitled How’s That?!, which included Local Hero and the Blaydon Races.

Squadron Commanding Officer Flight Lieutenant Gary Richardson said: “To perform at the Ashes is an honour and I am delighted that our young people performed their duties to a high standard and thoroughly enjoyed their day.

“I am tremendously proud of them and how they positively performed to represent the north east and its young people and it was great to see the crowd’s positive reaction.

“I thank them and Durham County Cricket Club for their generosity.”
