Campaigners have expressed their disappointment as the demolition of a seafront café moved a step closer.
Members of ‘Save and Revamp the Boardwalk Cafe’ were left angry after North Tyneside Council decided to demolish the building on Watts Slope, Whitley Bay, ‘immediately’.
More than 2,000 people signed a petition last year to try and save the facility but campaigners have questioned the council’s decision to go ahead when just 558 people supported the £30m Masterplan which earmarks the demolition.
Mayor Norma Redfearn said: “We are working towards securing a bright and successful future for Whitley Bay for generations to come.
“Within that Masterplan, we have detailed our intentions to significantly improve access for all users to the Northern Promenade at Watts Slope, creating a gateway for visitors. This will involve the demolition of the café, as confirmed in October.”
