A highly experienced keeper has joined the team at Tynemouth’s Blue Reef Aquarium.
Formerly from San Antonio, Texas, Caitlin Shields works with the aquarium’s California sea lions, harbour seals and Asian short clawed otters.
Caitlin, a marine science graduate of the Coastal Carolina University and a qualified diver, has previously worked in Texas, Hawaii, Vancouver and at the National Aquarium in Washington DC.
Blue Reef Aquarium’s Sharon Hedley said: “We’re delighted to have been able to recruit someone of Caitlin’s calibre.
“She brings with her a wealth of experience and is extremely enthusiastic and we are all very much looking forward to working with her.
“Caitlin already has some very exciting ideas involving environmental enrichment and husbandry for our seals and sea lions and has already started to form a close relationship with them.”
As well as looking after the seals and sea lions, Caitlin will also head up the aquarium’s public talks and feeding displays.
Caitlin said: “I am thrilled at the prospect of putting my experience to work at Blue Reef Tynemouth and am excited to have this amazing opportunity.”
