Campaign for lung checks

Screenings are taking place around the borough for residents to check their lungs for potentially chronic conditions.

North Tyneside Council is working with the British Lung Foundation (BLF) to hold chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) screening events as part of the ‘Love Your Lungs’ campaign.

In North Tyneside, the predicted prevalence of COPD is significantly worse than the average for England at 3.86 per cent compared to 2.93 per cent for the population of England.

The campaign will allow people who have had a persistent cough for three weeks or more, or feel breathless or wheezy, to speak to a respiratory nurse and take a lung function test.

The events will take place on:-

• Wednesday, November 6, at Gala Bingo, Wallsend, from 4.30pm to 9.30pm;

• Thursday, November 7, and November 21, at Asda Superstore, Benton, 10am to 4pm;

• Tuesday, November 12, at The Forum Shopping Centre, Wallsend, 10am to 4pm;

• Wednesday, November 13, and November 20, at Tesco Extra, North Shields, 10am to 4pm.

Marietta Evans, director of public health for North Tyneside, said: “Many don’t think about their lung health until it becomes a problem, so we are inviting everyone in North Tyneside who has felt breathless or has a persistent cough to come and join us.”
