Officials are preparing to sleep in a cardboard box to highlight the number of people sleeping rough.

YMCA North Tyneside has organised a challenge for people to spend the night in a cardboard box to help raise the profile of homelessness and make a statement.

People who sign up will sleep in a box from 7pm on Friday, March 18, to 7am the following day at St Cuthbert’s Church car park in Albion Road West, North Shields.

The event, which will see food provided by The Fat Hippo, aims to raise funds for the YMCA’s work with young people and homelessness.

Dean Titterton, YMCA chief executive, said: “Recent welfare reforms have had a significant impact on young people’s housing and shared accommodation is becoming the most or only affordable option.

“We currently house 20 young people in our Supported Accommodation projects but we’d like to help more young people who are in need.”
