A mayoral debate scheduled for tonight (Thursday) had to be cancelled after one of the candidates was unable to attend.
Each candidate – Linda Arkley (Conservative), Norma Redfearn (Labour), and Dr John Appleby (Lib Dem) – in the election on May 2 had agreed to attend the debate at TyneMet College.
But college officials were forced to cancel after Mrs Arkley was unable to attend due to circumstances beyond her control.
Jon Vincent, college principal and chief executive, said: “As hosts for this event we felt it was essential that all of the mayoral candidates would have the opportunity to fully participate in the debate.
“It is therefore with regret that we issue this notice of cancellation.”
