Car and house damaged in arson attack

A number of houses had to be evacuated after a car was set on fire, damaging a house in the process.

Police are appealing for witnesses after an arsonist targeted the car parked on a driveway in Wiltshire Gardens, Wallsend.

Emergency services were called out at 1.25am today (Monday).

Neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution and the fire service extinguished the fire a short time later.

The fire also damaged the front of the property next to where it was parked and caused smoke damage inside.

A 27-year-old man was treated by paramedics at the scene suffering from smoke inhalation, but did not attend hospital.

The car, a Renault Scenic was badly damaged. The cause of the fire, which is believed to have been malicious, has not yet been established.

Police are carrying out house to house enquiries and are appealing for witnesses.
