A charity supporting fishermen has been given a near £1,000 boost thanks to Christmas shoppers.

The Beacon Shopping Centre, in North Shields, raised more than £920 for the North Shields Fishermen’s Mission thanks to proceeds from it’s Santa’s Grotto.

The Mission is the only fishermen’s charity that provides emergency support alongside practical, financial, spiritual and emotional care.

It offers assistance to the families of fishermen who have been killed or seriously injured, supports survivors of fishing boat accidents and provides financial and emotional support to retired fishermen and their families.

Dave Menzies, centre manager, said: “The fishing industry is a very distinct and important part of our local heritage and so it is fitting that we support the Fishermen’s Mission.

“We are pleased to extend our support and ensure the funds we have raised go right back into our community.”

Peter Dade, Superintendent at the Mission, said: “We are very grateful to The Beacon for its donations and for allowing us to raise money in the centre. The money raised will help local and retired fishermen, as well as those affected by fishing tragedies and accidents in the north east.”
