Celebrating sport success for pupils
Athletic students were given the red carpet experience as they marked their own Sports Personality of the Year Awards.
Hundreds of guests packed into Playhouse Whitley Bay for Churchill Community College’s annual sports awards.
Students at the Wallsend school from 35 competitive teams including football, rugby, cricket, tennis, basketball, rowing, and athletics were honoured.
Executive headteacher David Baldwin said: “We value the importance of PE and school sport and recognise that it develops a wide range of skills including leadership and teamwork.
“We know young people who are active and healthy have a real focus in their lives and use this to do well in other subjects.
“Over the academic year, students have participated in more than 10,500 sessions through our extensive extra-curricular sports programme.
“It is not merely about winning but the taking part that counts and recognising the fantastic efforts of our young people.”
The awards were presented by former Sunderland player Maurice Hepworth. Guests also enjoyed dance performances by pupils from the college and Battle Hill Primary School.
The event was supported by North Tyneside-based teacher supply agency First Class Supply.
Co-director, Steph Boulton, said: “Sport can make a huge difference. We are pleased to be supporting Churchill and their fantastic work to inspire students.”
“It is wonderful to see the enthusiasm amongst students and also to celebrate their wide-ranging talents.”
