Free training is on offer to teenagers wanting to check out potential careers in retail.

The children’s charity Barnardo’s Palmersville training centre has joined forces with North Tyneside Council to run the training programme for potential shop staff.

It is aimed at those aged 16 to 18 and is intended to improve their teamwork and communication skills, as well as boosting their confidence and offering help with preparing CVs.

Christina Saunders-Wingfield, manager of the Whitley Road centre, said: “This is a great opportunity for young people to experience a retail environment.

“The skills and knowledge they will gain could support them into further education, employment and work based learning.

“It would be great for young people as a taster in retail.”

To register, call Claire Kapur on 0191 270 1133 or email claire.kapur@barnardos.org.uk

Young people taking the course will receive up to three months’ support after the programme to help them find a job and a £10 daily allowance for four days a week for five weeks.

They will also have the opportunity to study additional vocational skills such as beauty, business and administration, warehousing, customer service and painting and decorating. This could lead to further qualifications and support in reaching employment.
