Disruption to road users in part of Longbenton is to be kept to a minimum following new changes.
North Tyneside Council has reduced the number of days’ work on the A188 Benton Lane corridor as part of a £2.2m Department for Transport scheme.
We have planned the work in this way so we can carry out the improvements as quickly and efficiently as possibleCoun John Harrison, cabinet member with responsibility for highways
As part of the project, works are required at the A188-Goathland Avenue-West Farm Avenue roundabout, which were due to last for up to three weeks.
Instead, the road will be closed for two weekends in an effort to minimise disruption.
The closure will enable road reconstruction work to be carried out more efficiently while other highways activities, such as British Telecom and drainage works, can be carried out at the same time.
The closure will happen from Saturday, June 6, to Sunday, June 7, and Saturday, June 13, to Sunday, June 14, lasting from 6am on Saturday until around midnight on the Sunday.
It will stretch from the A188 Quorum Business Park-Balliol Business Park roundabout to the mini-roundabout near the Four Lane Ends Interchange.
Four Lane Ends Interchange will remain open and access will be maintained for emergency service vehicles.
Coun John Harrison, cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said: “We apologise in advance to local residents and drivers for the disruption that these weekend closures may cause.
“We have planned the work in this way so we can carry out the improvements as quickly and efficiently as possible, to minimize inconvenience for drivers and residents.
“Once complete, this major scheme will significantly improve the road network in this area and there will be less congestion, better public transport movements and improved road safety.
“There will also be significant additional capacity along the A188 northbound and southbound to cater for anticipated increased travel demand in the future, and drivers will be able to notice a real difference.”
The closure will prevent usual vehicle access onto the A188 Benton Lane via Goathland Avenue and West Farm Avenue. As a result, there will be temporary manned lights at the Ashleigh Grove/Station Road junction and West Farm Avenue/Salters’ Lane junction.
Southbound traffic on the A189 will be diverted at the A188-A189 Benton Lane-Salters’ Lane roundabout along Salters’ Lane. Access will continue to be provided for those seeking to access Balliol/Quorum Business Park, however those who would usually travel north along the A188 Benton Lane will need to use alternative routes.
