Charity grateful for books and wool donations

I would appreciate the opportunity to use your columns to publicly thank your readers for their generous response to our appeals for unused balls of wool and books.

We have collected enough wool from your readers to produce more than 1,000 items of knitwear for needy children in North Tyneside, which will be distributed over the next couple of weeks.

Age UK in Whitley Bay has an army of knitters working on this project and their weekly output is truly impressive.

And a 40ft container of books will be leaving Felixstowe in August bound for West Africa for distribution to poorly stocked schools and libraries in Nigeria.
