I am writing in response to an article about damage to Beaconsfield, in Tynemouth, following the visit from Planet Circus (News Guardian, May 15).
On behalf of North Tyneside Council, I would like to clarify the situation.
The recent spate of wet weather meant the ground was already saturated and soft; this coinciding with the arrival and departure of Planet Circus did indeed cause some damage to the field.
Planet Circus provided a bond that will be used to pay for repairs and the company has been extremely helpful in offering to assist the council with the remedial work.
It’s important to note that over the last ten years, Beaconsfield has played host to several circuses, bringing a lot of tourism to the coast and the wider area.
Planet Circus also proved to be extremely popular and received a huge amount of praise from visitors.
Thank you for giving me this opportunity to clarify the situation to News Guardian readers, something I thought was important to do.
