Northern Clothing Company (NCC), based at the Tyne Tunnel trading Estate, will produce high quality sports clothing.

Northern Clothing Company (NCC), based on the Tyne Tunnel Trading Estate, will produce high quality sports clothing for adults and children.

It was formed by former Newcastle Falcons player and MD at Orion Teamwear Richard Metcalfe and North East LEP board member Paul Varley.

They currently have ten to 16 seamstress jobs on offer, with hopes of creating further roles in the future.

Richard said: “Our aim is to re-shore the manufacturing of sports clothing from the Far East and re-establish this lost industry in the north east.

“In our first few weeks of operation the response we have had from prospective customers has been incredibly positive and as a result we are looking to hire 10-15 experienced seamstresses across the next few months and would welcome applications.”

NCC received Let’s Grow funding in order to help launch the business.

Richard added: “We are grateful for the help from Let’s Grow and North Tyneside Council in establishing our state of the art premises in the Tyne Tunnel Trading Estate and in procuring leading edge equipment to automate the manufacturing processes.”

Let’s Grow project advisor Andrew Frost said: “We’re delighted to have supported Northern Clothing Company with a Let’s Grow grant, and have been extremely impressed with the progress the company has made since the grant was awarded in early February this year.

“It’s really refreshing to see clothing manufacturing coming back to the Northeast after many years of off shoring to the Far East.”
