Club hears talk on ship battles

AN ILLUMINATING presentation into the story of the Admiral Graf Spee was given by John Gibson at a meeting of Cullercoats Men’s Club.

He started with background from 1918 when the German Fleet was impounded which triggered Admiral Ludwig to scuttle the fleet at Scapa Flow, through to the scuttling of the Graf Spee off Montevideo after being damaged in the battle of the river Plate off Buenos Aires Argentina.

The strategy of the pocket battleship was to hit and run which it did well sinking nine merchant ships totalling 50,000 tons over 77 days.

One thing that Captain Langsdorff did was to remove the crew of the ships before he sunk them.

The club meets every Wednesday between 10.30am and noon throughout the year with the exception of August and the Christmas period.
