A local Christmas tree supplier is bracing itself for a hectic festive period with more than 7,000 trees being delivered.

The bumper crop is the largest ever for Edelweiss Christmas Tree Company, based in Double Row near Seaton Delaval, and it expects to eclipse last year’s record figures.

Company boss Harry Laidler said: “The demand for a real Christmas tree has never been greater, which is why we’ve gone overboard again this year.

“We’ve been selling Christmas trees for 14 years and every year we’ve had to buy more and more in to satisfy demand.

“This year we’ve already had a mountain of inquiries from the public and we expect to sell in excess of 7,000 in the run-up to Christmas.”

He added: “There’s something special about going out and choosing your perfect Christmas tree.

“Modern families are very discerning and are looking for a tree that best suits their home.

“They not only look great but they smell fantastic too.

“And this year we’ve also got a bigger range of Christmas tree stands, to suit every tree size and every home.

“Buying a Christmas tree is an event, which is why at the weekends we’ve put on a free grotto featuring Santa.”

The Edelweiss Christmas Tree Company operates from Laidler’s Fruit and Vegetable Suppliers.

Santa’s Grotto is open on Saturdays, from 10am to 4pm, and Sundays, 11am to 3pm, and Santa will be there every weekend until December 14.
