Motorists are being advised of congestion on the A19 following a crash near the Tyne Tunnel.

A Peugeot 106 collided with a barrier on the southbound carriageway of the A19 at the Howdon junction today (Wednesday) at 3.10pm.

No other vehicles were involved in the collision and the driver was not injured.

As a result of the collision both lanes of the southbound A19 were closed and traffic has been diverted over the flyover and back on to the A19 before the Tyne Tunnel.

The incident has caused heavy congestion in the area with traffic queuing back to the Holystone junction.

A police spokesperson said: “Emergency services are on the scene to help recover the vehicle and drivers are being asked to remain patient.

“If motorists can find an alternative route than it is advised they avoid the area if possible.”
